Dentists get teeth into color run

A Larne dental practise team will ditch their pearly whites for an explosion of colour when they take part in the Belfast ‘Color Run’ for Women’s Aid.

Dentists, dental nurses and receptionists from Jennifer Christie’s Dental Practice are currently in training to take part in the five kilometre race.

Receptionist Lyndsey Beggs told The Times: “Our whole practice of eight people is taking part.

“The Color Run was something I saw last year and thought that it looked really fun.

“We have never done that kind of race before, although a couple of us competed in the ‘Race for Life’ for Cancer Research in June.

“We used the ‘Couch to 5k’ app and when we started training it motivated the whole practice to get involved.”

The practice selected Women’s Aid as a beneficiary of their fundraising efforts in order to support the organisation’s work with the children of domestic violence victims.

Lyndsey explained: “The charity provides summer schemes and after-schools clubs for children who have been affected by domestic violence.

“They speak to them and bring out their feelings so they aren’t bottling everything up.

“They also run a lot of courses for victims and their families to give them a better understanding of what happened so they won’t blame themselves.”

Lyndsey hopes that the practice’s fundraising efforts will make people affected by domestic violence more aware of the help available and encourage them to seek help.

The team are now looking forward to the Color Run, which will take place in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter on August 23.

The event sees runners being pelted with colourful sachets of powder at different stages of the race.

Lyndsey laughed: “We are told to wear white clothes so that the colour will show up.

“They send us our own packets of colour as well and we will be running through people who throw it at us. Everyone is looking forward to it and it’s not like any other race-it’s about having a good time.

“There is a fun dimension rather than beating a time and taking it seriously. We want to raise as much as possible for charity.”
