“The Great North Run sees 60,000 runners travel to Newcastle where the race begins for its 13 mile duration,” explained Mr Beckett. “This popular event is well known for the people who enter it for the purposes of raising money for charities of their choice.

“Marie Curie provides an invaluable service and so many people benefit from the strong support and caring approach brought to those in need from its nurses and staff. My own family has had personal experience of Marie Curie’s support so I know how valuable Marie Curie is. I hope people and the local community will support my efforts, because it is all for such a good cause.”

The Mayor, Councillor Andrew Ewing added: “I would like to express my thanks to my colleague and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Beckett. His efforts are very much appreciated and I know the council will wish him the very best of luck for the weekend.”

Sponsorship forms are available by contacting the Mayor’s Office on 028 9250 9331.
