Derby day!

IT’S derby day in the IBA Senior Cup this weekend as Whitehead take on Carrickfergus for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Whitehead, defending champions of the Northern Ireland Bowls Association Division 1, made their way into the last 32 of the tournament thanks to an away win at Londonderry Park.

Carrick booked their spot in the next round overcoming a 14-shot deficit to claim a 25-23 win over Lurgan.

The Shaftsbury Park men could welcome experienced skips Allister Murphy and Dessie Hill back for this one after their last-end defeat to Donaghadee on Saturday.

The Whites prepared for the Cup clash with a comprehensive NIBA Division One win over Dundonald on Saturday and were set to take on Dungannon in the semi-final of the NIBA Senior Cup on Wednesday evening.

Elswhere, Whitehead duo Barry Browne and Martin McHugh have been selected to represent Ireland at the 2011 British Isles International Series to be held at Sighthill, Edinburgh on July 2 and 3.
