Derrytresk camogs going the extra mile in Aine’s memory

The hardy bunch, who can often be seen pounding the tarmac in the wider Coalisland and surrounding areas of an evening, may not be experienced cyclists but are determined to do their bit to make this year’s Tour the Lough event - which takes place on Sunday June 7 - the biggest and best ever.

This time around, the organisers of the charity cycle, Naomh Colum Cille Hurling Club, have given local sporting and community organisations the chance to raise money for individual causes of their choice.

Derrytresk Camogie Club will be donating the proceeds from their participation in the event - which has distances of 25, 50 and 100 miles - to the children’s cancer charity, Clic Sargent, in memory of Aine Hughes, who lost her battle with leukaemia nearly 11 years ago.

Aine’s legacy continues to burn brightly within the growing camogie community in Derrytresk and the club holds fundraising events every year in her honour.

Caillini an Chnoic Chairperson, Josephine McKeown, told the TIMES: “We have had a dedicated group of inexperienced cyclists out training this past few weeks ahead of the Tour of the Lough, These are parents whose children attend the club and they have given up their time and set themselves a challenge so that they can help the charity Clic Sargent. We chose to affiliate ourselves with the charity to help other children and keep the memory of Aine alive.”
