Destined need your backing

DESTINED is delighted to announce that they have reached the finals of the National Lottery Awards with their project 'Access to Citizenship' and would like to take the opportunity to thank the thousands of people who voted for them either by phone or on-line.

Access to Citizenship is an innovative project for people with learning disabilities that is delivered in partnership with the Western Health and Social Care Trust, the North West Regional College and Mencap.

The group will now be involved in another round of voting that started on the 25th July and they are competing against two other projects to win the final in the Best Health project.

There will be an awards ceremony in London in early September that will be broadcast on primetime Saturday night television by BBC 1. The Access to Citizenship project will be featured on the programme and just today the BBC camera crews have been in town featuring some of the Destined work.

Speaking at the announcement of their new voting campaign Dermot O’Hara, Manager, said “there is tremendous goodwill and generosity in the city towards our organisation and people with learning disabilities and this was reflected in the level of support we got from all over, number of votes we got, the number of networks and databases that people gave us access to and the amount of media publicity we got from the local papers and radio.”

He continued “We were delighted with the response we got on our face book. If nothing else the Awards campaign gave us a chance to profile the organisation locally and our members are meeting people all the time who are talking about people with learning disabilities. It would give me the greatest pleasure to see Michael Cole lifting the award live on TV.”

Destined are organising a “Vote Destined Day” on Wednesday 11th August 2010 with community centres and offices throughout the city becoming voting centres to allow everyone the opportunity to vote.
