After being awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, a party from Oakfield Primary School had the opportunity to attend the Eco-Schools 20th anniversary event in Meadowbank Sports Arena, Magherafelt, which was organised by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

They were among thousands of young people from across the province who joined in the celebration of the international programme.

Eco-Schools ambassador Frank Mitchell compered the event, a world record attempt was made, Scientific Sue dazzled with an explosive presentation and Junk Kouture treated students to a unique ‘recycled fashion show’.

Helen Cardwell, Oakfield Eco-Schools co-ordinator, commented: “Members of the school’s Eco team had a great day, taking in the various exhibitions and enjoying some practical demonstrations.”

Noting the party had particularly enjoyed watching the award-winning ‘Scientific Sue’s’ science show, Mrs Cardwell added: “The Junk Kouture fashion show was another highlight, and the kids enjoyed looking at the outfits and trying to work out what recycled materials they were made from.

“We also got to do a minibeast hunt, and found lots of interesting creepy crawlies. We also enjoyed meeting Frank Mitchell, who was compere for the event.”
