It was thrown at a passing police patrol in Ballycolman Avenue.

“While we have not been forced to evacuate any homes or businesses the local Gaelscoil has taken the decision to remove staff and pupils while the search is ongoing.

“I plan to carry out a further search of the area with a trained police dog so I can be satisfied there is no device present.

“What we are dealing with here has either been a reckless attack on police or a deliberate hoax call. Either way, disruption has been caused to this community this morning and that is wholly unacceptable.

“We will endeavour to complete our searches in the area as quickly as possible however public safety is my paramount concern and I will take all necessary steps to ensure we are keeping this community safe.”
