d’Hondt system in place for next four years in Council

COLERAINE Borough councillors voted in favour of the d’Hondt system to allocate positions for the next four years.

The vote was taken at last Monday night’s Annual General Meeting.

The mathematical system works on a highest averages method for allocating seats.

This means that as the DUP are the biggest party in Council there will be a DUP Mayor for three out of the next four years.

This year the DUP hold three key positions - Mayor, Chairman of the Leisure and Environment Committee and Chairman of the Planning Committee. The UUP hold the remaining two - Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Policy and Development Committee.

Next year - the DUP will hold two postions, the SDLP will hold two positions and the UUP will hold one position.
