Digital extravaganza

The Mayor has issued a warm welcome to the 1,000 delegates expected to converge in Londonderry over the coming week as the city embraces all things digital, from street art to digital funfairs, during the CultureTECH Festival.

Speaking ahead of the event, which takes place at a number of local venues from tomorrow, August 29 to September 1, Mayor Kevin Campbell said the festival shone a light on the city’s role at the forefront of the digital revolution in the north.

“As a city, Derry is committed to embracing digital technology and reaping the benefits of the latest advances for local businesses. This innovative programme of events will showcase some of the most exciting ongoing digital projects from both the North West and further afield.

“The festival is already making its mark both nationally and internationally, thanks to the calibre of speakers and companies involved, and we are delighted to welcome all those participating to the city.”

The Council’s Town Clerk and Chief Executive, Sharon O’Connor, said CultureTECH presented a fantastic opportunity to showcase the city.

“Derry is a young and vibrant city brimming with new talent and innovation. We have the potential to take the lead in the digital revolution and make our mark as a city of opportunity and ingenuity.

“We have already demonstrated our ability to host major events with an international appeal following the resounding success of the Clipper Festival, and events such as CultureTECH extend our reach into the world of business and technology, establishing our place alongside bigger cities in what we can deliver.”

The four day festival is a truly unique celebration of digital culture featuring an eclectic mix of music, technology and media in the digital age. Even ‘techno-phobes’ will be able to find something on the diverse programme of interactive workshops, talks and live music events, to entertain and educate throughout the course of the festival.

But it’s not all fun and games, as the intensive programme offers the exciting opportunity for local businesses and budding entrepreneurs to tap into the most cutting edge advice available on digital technologies and their many applications.

The line-up features a series of talks by leading lights in digital media and business, from Ben Hammersley, internet technologist, broadcaster, diplomat and Editor of Wired UK, to the Director of the Barbican in London, Sir Nicholas Kenyon.

Bridging the gap between technology and creativity, the events span a number of genres, from music production to social media, and even the kids can get involved in the creative process, with a series of free events for young people.
