Dissident protest cancelled

A PROTEST due to be held tomorrow (Saturday, August 14) by dissident republicans in Londonderry city centre has been cancelled.

It was organised to highlight a dispute between republican prisoners at Magheraberry jail and the prison authorities.

However, following the intervention of mediators, the dispute was resolved yesterday (Thursday, August 12).

Concerns had been rife that the protest was due to coincide with the annual Relief of Derry parade, by the Apprentice Boys of Derry-the largest loyal order parade on the marching calendar.

Police in the city have welcomed the decision and said it was a "positive development."

Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin said: "It reduces some of the risks associated with Saturday. I think there will be many people in the city who will be pleased to hear that the prison protest has been called off.

"I would ask for everyone to show leadership over the next couple of days."
