Distraction burglary arrest: Police

Detectives have arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with a distraction burglary in Ballymoney earlier this month. The man has since been released on police bail as investigations into the matter continue.

“People involved in distraction burglaries take advantage of the trust and good will of others”, explains PSNI Crime Prevention Officer Judith Lavery.

“They will look for a way to get inside a house and take for cash or valuables. They might, for example, cold call at a house and offer clothes for sale as the initial means of getting inside. Most callers at your door will be genuine however some individuals will try to use the trust and good will of residents to trick their way inside for criminal purposes.”

Judith provided this crime prevention advice: “When dealing with an unexpected caller to your door it is always advisable to keep them outside and not let them in until you are sure of their identity. You should ask all callers for proof of ID. Inspect their credentials carefully and ensure the photo is theirs. Genuine callers will be glad to show you their identification and will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they.

Do not feel pressured to just let any caller in, if there’s any doubt – keep them out. Neighbours can also play a vital part in helping protect the more vulnerable in their community against this kind of crime.
