Distraction-type burglary in Ballymoney

It was reported that at around 10am a man called to the home of an elderly woman offering a power cleaning service.

A police spokesperson said: “The woman refused and the man left, only to return at around 1pm that afternoon informing the woman that he was there to check the water in her kitchen.

“The man was shown in and whilst he remained in the kitchen another man entered the house and rifled through the bedrooms. The householder on leaving the kitchen disturbed the accomplice and both men then made off. Police believe they left the area in a car that was parked nearby with a third male on board.

“The first man was described as being in his late teens, of medium height and build with dark hair whilst the second was around 6’ tall of medium build and was wearing a brown jumper.

“Police would ask anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area or who has any information to contact them at CID in Coleraine on 08456008000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800555111.”

Police would offer the following advice and would ask family members to reinforce this advice with elderly relations:

* Think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise the caller.

* Always ask callers for proof of identity. Genuine callers will carry a photographic identification card. Ask to see their identification and check this closely to make sure that it is valid. Genuine callers will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they are.

* Alternatively, if you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don’t let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return.

* Finally, be aware. You know who lives on your street so if you see someone acting suspiciously note down any important details such as a description or car registration and contact police. We will follow up on your call and there is every possibility your information could prevent a crime.
