Diverters to be installed on East Antrim power lines

NIE was set to introduce diverters on power lines in the area after the deaths of a number of endangered birds in January 2001.

Whitehead man Cameron Moore claimed that nine Lightbellied Brent Geese and one Curlew died after collisions with cables.

He said: “They are lovely birds about the size of a duck with black necks and grey and white feathers. I’ve been on about it for years but it’s now out in the open how many are being killed.”

James Orr, from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust said: “NIE have agreed the next time it is feasible they will put diverters in place.”

A spokesman from NIE said they were committed to resolving the problem of geese, swans and other large birds colliding with lines.
