Do you have any memories of the Queen’s visits to Lisburn

THIS photograph was taken at Long Kesh on 17th July 1945, following the arrival of two RAF Dakota aircraft conveying King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother) and Princess Elizabeth (as she was then) to Northern Ireland for an official visit, their first by air.

It is possible that the man with his back to the photographer is the King, who travelled in one of the aircraft while Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret travelled in the other. It was deliberate policy to put the Sovereign and the Heir to the throne in different aircraft just in case an accident should befall the aircraft in which the Sovereign was travelling. This was Princess Elizabeth’s first ever flight.
