Dodds calls for fuel duty to be cut

NORTH Belfast MP, Nigel Dodds, has called on the main parties at Westminster to give a boost to the economy by cutting tax and duty on petrol and diesel.

“Prices at the pumps are now higher than ever. Whilst world supplies of oil are an issue, it is clear that over 75 pence of the price of every litre of fuel sold at the pumps goes to the Exchequer in taxes and duty. This is one of the factors in the atrociously high level of fuel prices across the country, but particularly in Northern Ireland,” the DUP man said.

“The current level of fuel prices is unsustainable and is having a negative effect not only on ordinary hard-pressed families, but on many businesses. These businesses are finding their costs rising dramatically and this is having a knock-on effect on jobs and profitability. I believe that instead of proceeding with high cost and unnecessary ID cards at a cost of billions, the next government, of whatever political make-up, should be taking steps to save this money and using it to reduce costs to businesses and ordinary families,” he added.
