Dog fighting issue raised

Upper Bann MP David Simpson was one of the many Members of Parliament who met in Westminster Hall to discuss the current scourge of dog fighting in our society.

Although banned in 1835 organised dog fights have been on a steady rise in recent years. Reports show that no one convicted of this offence since 2010 has received custodial sentence.

The Upper Bann MP availed of the opportunity to update fellow members of the progress made in Northern Ireland surrounding animal cruelty. Northern Ireland has the toughest laws in legislation which are hoped to act as a deterrent.

Speaking after the debate David Simpson said: “This debate was represented from all sides of the House. MP’s attended to show their support and willingness to do what they could on behalf of their constituents to tackle this growing scourge in our respective communities.

It was one of the more difficult debates to research and the grotesque facts that were heard yesterday was quite simply unbelievable. However, it is a reality and one that we cannot ignore.”
