Dollar and Dime dancers returnfrom Blackpool with world titles

Instructor Elaine Montgomery has continued to show her commitment to the discipline for many years by passing on her knowledge through dance classes for social dancers and coaching for those competing at competitions at All Ireland and European levels.

This year seven dancers went a step further and joined a huge contingent of Irish dancers competing at the World Dance Masters Championships in Blackpool over August 14-16.

It was a weekend full of line dancing, including top class instructors, world class shows, and the girls, against some very tough competition, succeeded in bringing back some brilliant results including two World Championship titles.

Elaine has been passionate about her dance sport ever since having competed in and came second in the Advanced Solo and Showcase at the World Championships at the home of Country music, Nashville in 2010.

This year Lára Pádraigín Ní Chearbhaill from Armagh who is a World Superstar competitor and dance coach helped prepare the dancers for the World Masters Championships.

The haul of awards were as follows.

World Champions

Jodie Riddles: Newcomer Teen Solo World Champion

Lucy O’Hara: Newcomer Teen Pro-am Champion dancing with Shane McKeever

Other brilliant results were: Tammy Duncan: 2nd Place Starter Open

Orla Dixon: 2nd place Novice Open and 2nd place Novice Pro-am

Bronagh Archibald: 6th place Newcomer Open

Lucy O’Hara: 8th place in Novice Teen

Shannon McCarter: 2nd place in Pro-am and 6th in Duos and 2nd in Partners with Lucy O’Hara

Jodie Riddles 5th place and Hannah Duncan 6th place in Pro-am, 4th in Duos and 7th in Partners

Club Division: 7th place

Classes are held at the Irish Street community centre every Thursday - beginners 7pm – 8pm

A new beginner class will also be starting in the Eglinton community hall from October 6.

These classes will run from 7pm – 8pm

Linedancing is a choreographed form of popular dance incorporating a repeating sequence of steps and which is identically performed by a group of dancers in one or more lines.

Whilst is has been most closely associated with Country music over recent decades it draws from a wide variety of influences.

It came into its own, however, from the early 1990s when it was popularised in pubs and clubs across the United States of America and throughout the Western World including Ireland, north and south of the border.
