Dominican supporting Uganda charity

A former Domincan College pupil revisted the school last week to make a special thank you presentation.

Mairead Murphy, from the charity Child Support Uganda, brought with her a shield carved in the shape of Africa to say thank you to the staff and pupils for their fundraising efforts over the past three years.

The school has raised more than 6,000 for the charity.

The shield was made by some of the children from Uganda that Dominican have supported.

The beautiful carving on the shield reads: “Teachers and pupils of DCP - God bless you for all you have done for us. Hajala, Henry, Juliet, Viola, Moses, Aidan, Sulaiman, Saidat, Viola and Annet”.

Mairead explained how, thanks to the millions of steps taken during Dominican sponsored walks, slum children in Uganda were able to attend school and receive an education which helps them to escape a life of povetry in the slums.

She gave all the pupils in the school a vivid picture of their lives, describing how up to ten family members would be forced to share a single room mud house with no sanitation.

Dominican vice-principal, Mrs Ronan, praised the pupils for “the positive power of prayer and fund-raising” and accepted the shield on behalf of the school.
