Doneysheil Road in poor condition

Sinn Féin councillor Cathal McLaughlin has called upon Roads Service to carry out essential road works on the Doneysheil Road, Rasharkin, between Portna Road and the main Bann Road to Kilrea.

The local councillor said he has been contacted by local residents about the poor condition of the surface. Sinn Féin has secured a minor resurfacing scheme for the road but local MLA Daithí McKay also argues that more needs to be done.

Speaking after alerting Roads Service to his concerns Councillor McLaughlin said:

“The road has large potholes which have developed over the past number of months resulting in a car being damaged recently. There are quite a number of residential homes on this stretch, as well as the local farmers who depend on the road on a daily basis.

“Whilst it would be considered as a minor road, nevertheless it still has a considerable daily volume of traffic. The poor condition is an obvious concern to local people who live in the area, and they have outlined these issues to me in recent days.”

Mr McKay added:

“We have been lobbying Roads Service for some time about the state of Doneyshiel and Roads Service has now agreed to carry out a minor resurfacing scheme on part of the road. However we still feel more needs to be done, particularly in regard to drainage.

“I have been raising the matter of a drainage scheme since January last year and whilst this was on the list of works unfortunately no agreement could be reached on obtaining an outlet. Work needs to continue in regard to this as excess water lying on the Doneyshiel could ultimately compromise road and pedestrian safety.”
