Don’t dumpdrugs onyour own,warn police

Police in Londonderry are urging people not to dispose of illegal drugs such as mephedrone if they stumble upon them in their daily lives but instead to hand them over to the authorities.

The call follows an incident in which a member of the public disposed of what he believed was a legal high.

In fact, from a later conversation he had with police, it transpired the material was Mephedrone, which is not legal.

Sergeant Phil Martin, of the Foyle City North Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Mephedrone used to be legal, it was one of the so-called legal highs, but the classification changed and it is now an illegal drug. Slang names include drone, M-CAT, Monkey Madness and meow meow

“We are urging local people to hand over to us any material they become aware of and suspect is drugs-related.

“It is important to keep in mind that ‘legal highs’ may pose a risk also and these can be handed in to police as well.”

Contact can be made with local neighbourhood policing teams on the 101 non-emergency number.
