Don't make it a Happy Christmas for burglars

LISBURN'S police chief is urging everyone to help protect themselves against burglars this Christmas by taking a few minutes each day to properly secure their property.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Darrin Jones said police don't want the community to give any early presents to criminals just because they didn't make sure their home was locked up.

Chief Inspector Jones said: "The disappointing fact is that in almost 50% of all burglaries thieves gain access through unlocked doors and windows, so we need people to ensure that their properties are secured all year round.

"Burglary is a key priority for the Police in Lisburn. We know how distressing it is to have your home violated. We are sending out a clear message this Christmas that if you commit a burglary, you will be robustly pursued.

"The 'Close it, Lock it, Check it' publicity campaign which will be running across the Lisburn area identifies some straightforward steps householders can take to defeat opportunistic burglars.

"When you leave your home make sure everything is secure. Report all suspicious activity to police and ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home and do the same for them.

"Make sure all security lighting and alarms are properly fitted and working. Always lock garages and sheds and never leave keys in visible sight of thieves.

"Our advice is simple - to defeat the burglar and protect your property, simply close and lock your doors and windows and check your home security before leaving the house or going to bed at night."
