Carrick was handed the silver gilt award in the Large Town section, with Whitehead scooping the same accolade in the Small Town category.

The awards ceremony for the contest took place last Thursday evening in Bristol.

Expressing his delight over the win was Stephen Daye, Parks and Countryside Officer with Carrickfergus Borough Council, who attended the ceremony with members of Brighter Whitehead.

“It’s a great result and the highest award Carrickfergus has ever received in Britain in Bloom,” he said.

The wins are a testament to the hard work of council staff, said Brighter Whitehead chairman, Bill Pollock. “Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible,” he added.

Paying tribute to the input of community groups was Alderman May Beattie, chair of the Parks, Countryside and Amenities subcommittee.

“I’d like to thank Brighter Whitehead and Carrickfergus Regeneration Partnership in the town centre for their hard work in planting their areas; the results will be there to enjoy all year round,” she said.
