Doubts over new 3G pitch

FRESH doubt has been cast over a new state-of-the art 3G pitch after angry residents voiced concern over it's cost.

At a public meeting held by Limavady Borough Council to address worries over the proposed multi-million sports ground on the Scroggy Road, many rate-payers said the cost would put added pressure on council rates. Alderman George Robinson, who attended the meeting last Wednesday night at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre, says now maybe the wrong time to go ahead with the "substantial expenditure". Alderman Robinson, who spoke with members of the public who attended, says a "smaller scale" training facility may match the current economic climate at this time.

He said: "I am of the belief that at the present time Limavady Borough Council cannot afford to burden the ratepayers with this expense. I have proposed that the scheme is deferred and reviewed in two years time when the economic climate may well be different. Various sporting groups have suggested a smaller scale training facility, which should be examined provided finance is available.

The MLA added that Limavady Borough Council need to re-evaluate (all projects which require large capital investment.

He continued: "In recent years the council has spent large amounts on capital projects therefore we now have to watch every penny that is spent.

"Provision of good quality sporting facilities is always welcome, but we do always have to remember that money is tight for everybody at this time, and that includes councils and ratepayers".
