Work, including the cutting back of trees and litter clearance, has been completed through the Doury Road Building Successful Communities Programme funding, Mr Frew explained.

He said the path improvement work “has been a long time goal for the people who use it to walk to the Health Centre and for people living in Glenarriff Cresent who have been pestered and tormented with people hanging around drinking and sometimes taking drugs”.

He said: “This is fantastic news for the local community and is just one strand of the many benefits being delivered through the Building Successful Communities (BSC) Programme.

“Doury Road is the ‘only’ area outside of Belfast to receive such funding and support and is going to be a tremendous success for everyone living close by.

“This area and, indeed, whole BSC programme came out of a visit a number of years ago when I invited the then Minister for Social development Nelson McCausland down to see for himself the challenges facing the Doury Road Community,” he said.
