Down’s Syndrome talk for Fellowship

The Causeway Branch of the Health & Social Care Retirement Fellowship NI, held their first meeting of the New Year last Wednesday in the Causeway Hospital.

After welcoming everyone Chairman Mrs Meta Cochrane read a piece entitled ‘New Year Reflections’.

Guest speaker Mr Kevin McNicholl was then introduced.

Kevin has been involved with the Down’s Syndrome Association for a number of years and is currently a voluntary leader of a youth club in Ballymoney for young people with Down’s Syndrome.

.The Association provides information and support for people with Down’s Syndrome, their families, carers and health professionals.

Kevin gave an interesting, informative and inspiring talk illustrated with a selection of photographs.

He described the various activities that the Down’s Syndrome Association organise.

This includes a number of youth clubs for 13 – 35 year olds, throughout Northern Ireland. Social nights are also held regularly for 16+ year olds and can include such activities as pizza nights and discos.

A Song and Dance programme is ongoing with professional dancers giving their time to train the members.

Lastly members heard about their Citizenship Programme. Over the last few years a group of people with Down’s Syndrome have taken part in various projects throughout their communities and also further afield.

Before heading homewards, an opportunity was given for members to ask Kevin questions about the Down’s Syndrome Association. Members thanked Kevin for his interesting talk.
