DPP chair urges Christmas vigilance

THE Chairman of Londonderry’s policing watchdog is asking people to be vigilant and to look after the elderly and vulnerable over the Christmas period.

Speaking in advance of the holiday break the Londonderry District Policing Partnership (DPP) Chairman Thomas Conway said: “At this time of year many homes hold expensive presents and I would urge householders to ensure that their homes are secured even if they are only popping out for a few minutes. I would also ask neighbours, particularly in isolated rural areas, to look out for the elderly and vulnerable and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police.”

He also warned against the serious consequences of drink-driving over the festive season.

“Christmas is a time for family gatherings and celebrations but I would ask that people seriously consider the implications of drink-driving on themselves and others,” he stated.

People should use taxis or agree a designated driver if they are out celebrating over Christmas. Further I would suggest that anyone walking, especially in the rural area should wear reflective clothing to be safe and be seen. “Christmas should be a time of enjoyment for all the family and no-one wants this disrupted by preventable burglary, people losing their driving licence or being the victim of drunken assaults. By working in partnership we can all play our part in making this a safer holiday season for all,” said Mr Conway.
