DPP urges vigilance this summer

HOUSEHOLDERS in Londonderry are being encouraged to be vigilant and protect their homes this summer

Last year the local District Policing Partnership (DPP) delivered a bin sticker to every household in the Council area as a reminder to homeowners to secure their properties, especially when they go on holidays.

Speaking on this issue Alderman Joe Miller, DPP Chairperson said: "We are fully supportive of any initiatives that raise public awareness of the need to keep homes safe.

"Last year we witnessed a 'spike' in domestic burglaries in Foyle over the summer months. Thankfully, the PSNI have been successful in tackling this crime but we cannot become complacent.

"Many of these crimes are opportunistic and are easily avoidable and it is now an opportune time to remind residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes secure from criminals."

Offering advice on home security, Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Chris Yates added: "I would simply remind householders to close their doors and windows, lock their doors and windows and check their home is secure.

"I understand with the summer weather people are leaving windows and doors open but this is seen as an open opportunity by unscrupulous burglars.

"Over half of our domestic burglaries last year were opportunistic, with the criminal entering through unlocked doors or windows. A few minutes checking doors and windows can save people from the heartache of dealing with the aftermath of a break-in and burglary."
