Drains and pipework cleared after flooding at Greenisland underpass

Earlier this week, heavy rain effectively cut off the pedestrian passageway under the railway line.

Dozens of people took to Facebook to vent their anger, claiming floodwaters had made it difficult for schoolchildren and rail commuters to negotiate the route.

They also voiced frustration at “mixed messages” when attempting to contact the relevant authority over the situation.

East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson, who was “inundated” with complaints about the problem, called for a multi-agency response after the Department of Regional Development and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said the issue did not fall under their remit with a spokesperson for NI Water indicating likewise, adding that an “undesignated water course is the problem”.

A Translink spokesperson told the Carrick Times that NI Railways was made aware of flooding at Greenisland station on Wednesday morning.

“Workers have been working hard to clear drains under the railway and will continue tomorrow to clear blockages in the pipework,” said the spokesperson.

“We would remind pedestrians not to use railway tracks as a shortcut and to ensure all appropriate warning signals and instructions are fully observed and obeyed for their safety.”
