Drama delivers internet safety for kids in Mid Ulster

Children in 12 schools have been receiving dramatic lessons in cyber bullying and internet safety, in a programme funded by Mid Ulster Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

The schools have been taking part in a series of drama workshops across the Mid Ulster District for Key Stage 2 pupils (9 – 12 years) to address cyber bullying, internet safety and the importance of cyber safety to children and young people.

The ‘Who’s At The Door’ programme was delivered by the PSNI Schools Officers in conjunction with Beam Creative Network. The programme provided key e-safety messages in a way that children could relate too. It included scenarios identified and created by their parents.

Workshops were held in Windmill Integrated Primary, Dungannon Primary, Phoenix Integrated Primary, Cookstown Primary, St Patrick’s Primary, Dungannon Fivemiletown Primary, Howard Primary, Aughnacloy Primary, St Patrick’s Primary, Donaghmore, Holy Trinity, Cookstown, Primate Dixon Primary and Edendork Primary Schools.

Chair of the PCSP, Councillor Phelim Gildernew, said: “PSNI Schools Officers have consistently identified internet safety and cyber bullying as a major issue for parents and young people. Children and young people can be easily led by curious minds and naivety into very dangerous situations and are often unaware of how personal information can be misused by others. They can also be unaware of the extent to which their personal information can be broadcast across the world wide web.” He continued, “These interactive workshops provide an excellent method of engaging with children, challenging attitudes and behaviour with regards to online bullying.”
