Liam McGuigan (37), of Scuther’s Lane, Draperstown, admitted possessing one gram of herbal cannabis on July 21.

A PPS lawyer said police on mobile patrol followed a car into the Woodland housing development, Draperstown, around 5.55am.

She said the defendant got out of the car and police shouted at him to stop, which he did. The cannabis was found in a plastic bag in his pocket.

Defence solicitor Stephen Atherton said the defendant had been held in custody for eight hours and during a lenghty interview he told police that he was cleaning up at the festival and found the drugs.

Mr Atherton said instead of getting rid of them McGuigan had taken them with him.

He said he had made representations to the police and PPS about the circumstances to no avail.

District Judge Alan White made an order for the destruction of the drugs.
