Stewart Morton, Parkwood, Lisburn, was also banned for ten years for driving with excess alcohol in blood on April 20 this year.

Fines of £300 and concurrent 12 month bans were imposed on charges of driving while disqualified and not having insurance.

He was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

Around 5pm police received a report of a man under the influence of drink leaving an off licence and getting into a vehicle. The registration number was given to police.

Later police attended a single vehicle accident where a car had crashed into a wall at Gowdystown Road, Dromore. This was the same vehicle reported earlier.

Morton admitted being the driver and he smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he had taken some glasses of wine.

A blood sample gave a reading of 333 – the legal limit is 80.

He had been disqualified from driving at Suffolk Magistrates Court in July of last year.

The case had been adjourned from a previous court so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

A solicitor representing the defendant said that Morton has had a drink problem for 30 years but has been alcohol free since this happened.

He added that the defendant can not really give any explanation why he got into the vehicle which was no longer active.

Imposing the custodial sentence District Judge Benita Boyd said Morton was four times the limit and the public were at risk.

Bail was set at £500 for him to appeal against the sentence.
