Thirty-eight-year-old Gerard Woolsey, McGreavy Drive, Lurgan, admitted driving with excess alcohol in breath and driving without due care and attention on March 2 this year.

Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday that police went to a road traffic collision on the Derrymacash Road where a car had driven into the rear of another vehicle.

They spoke to the defendant and smelled alcohol on him. A breath test gave a reading of 138 – the limit is 35.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was an ‘extraordinarily high reading’.

Mr Peter Murphy, representing the defendant, said that Woolsey stopped at the scene of the accident and went to speak to the two injured parties in the other vehicle.

He added that they were not too happy with him. The defendant’s mother and sister arrived and he sat in the back of their car.

Mr Murphy explained that Woolsey had parked his car on the Friday night and had been drinking over the course of the weekend. This was Sunday and he did not know what possessed him to take the car.

It was a high reading because he had been drinking over a couple of days, he added.

Judge Bates said the defendant was four times the limit and it was aggravated by the fact there was an accident.

He adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report so that he could consider the sentencing options.

Judge Bates said Woolsey should not have been near a car or on the road.

He disqualified him from driving on an interim basis and would decide the length of the ban once he had
seen the pre-sentence
report.
