Councillor Matthew Magill condemned the incident which occurred at around 6pm on Monday evening on the Seven Mile Straight near Muckamore.

Detectives from Antrim are looking into the incident which is believed to have involved a shotgun fired from a moving vehicle toward another passing vehicle.

Detective Inspector Millar said: “The shotgun is believed to have been fired from another moving car, an old-style red Vauxhall.

“No one was injured and a motive is under investigation.”

Councillor Magill said: “This sort of incident is unheard of in what many will know is a very quiet rural area.

“Whilst exact details are still unknown, it is evident that such behaviour was incredibly reckless and irresponsible.

“Whoever was involved in this attack had no regard for the safety of those within the community and other road users.

“Thankfully no one was injured but it is clear that this shooting could easily have caused serious injury or death. I would urge anyone with information regarding this incident on Monday evening to contact Antrim PSNI.”

Information can be given on the police non-emergency number, 101.
