Drive to find homes for young care leavers in the NW

A charity that supports vulnerable young care leavers is hosting an information day in Londonderry this month to help encourage people to provide lodgings for 16 to 24-year-olds.

Action for Children is hosting the event in the Millennium Forum on August 27, from 7pm to 9pm.

The charity is piloting the new project to seek lodgings for young adults who are in care, leaving care or those young people in the community who are at risk of homelessness.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Our aim is to provide these young people with safe, suitable and supportive places to live within a familial type environment and develop the skills needed for a successful transition to independence, but do that we need members of the community to open up their homes.

“We are encouraging anyone who has a spare room and feels like they can offer a supportive environment to consider becoming a supported lodgings provider (host provider)

“Action for Children recruits supported lodgings providers in both the Northern and Western trust areas.

“At present we offer a weekly allowance of £175 to cover rent and other associated costs (this rate may change depending on the circumstances of the young person).
