Glen Roy Martin, Village Walk, Portadown, admitted driving without insurance on November 24 last year.

The court heard that the defendant was driving in Corcrain Drive when a police check revealed he was not insured.

The court was told that his policy had been cancelled on October 20.

Martin claimed he had not received any correspondence about the cancellation and was unaware he was not insured.

Mr Joe McDonald, representing the defendant, said his client already had six points on his licence for permitting someone to drive without insurance.

He explained that the person who drove was Martin’s brother-in-law who said he had insurance and he took his word.

Mr McDonald added that the defendant had to send off details of his driving licence and no claims bonus to the insurance company but did not do this and the policy was cancelled.

He said that Martin was the only driver in the household and had to take one of his children to Lurgan hospital and a centre in Armagh so without a licence it would be extremely difficult for him.

The child was going to suffer because of the defendant’s mistakes as public transport couldn’t be used, Mr McDonald told the court.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said this was Martin’s third time in court for an offence involving no insurance charges.

The judge added that while she had sympathy with the family this was a serious offence.

The judge imposed a fine of £250, ordered him to pay a £15 offender’s levy and gave him six points.

This brought him to 12 points and as a result of the tot-up system, Martin was banned from driving for six months.
