Driver turned from police

A six month ban was imposed on a 46-year-old man last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court for driving without insurance or a licence.

Stephen Goodbarn, The Poplars, Donaghcloney, was also fined £250 for not having insurance and £100 for the licence offence. As well he was ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that on December 15 last year police were dealing with another motorist at Princesgate, Dromore, when they saw a vehicle stop short of them and then turn away.

They followed it as this was suspicious and, when stopped, the defendant was asked to produce his insurance and licence but failed to do so.

A solicitor representing Goodbarn said he had been disqualified in this jurisdiction in 2011 and knew that he was not insured.

He explained that a friend of the defendant had been out having a drink and Goodbarn agreed to collect him.

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said the defendant had shown a ‘casual and indifferent at worse’ attitude to the road traffic legislation.
