Drivers risking lives at Castlerock level crossing

POLICE in Coleraine are concerned by an increasing number of reports of drivers risking life and limb at the level crossing in Sea Road in Castlerock.

The latest incidents happened on Tuesday May 18, and on Thursday May 20 when two vehicles were seen to drive across the level crossing as the barriers were being lowered to close the road.

Neighbourhood Constable Kyle Millar is worried by the reckless actions of those concerned.

"This is a highly dangerous practice that places the driver and occupants of the car, and everyone on the train at risk of injury, and it must stop.

"Most crossings have full or half barriers, and traffic light signals. Drivers must stop behind the white line across the road when the lights come on. If you have already crossed the white line, when the amber lights or audible alarm start, continue on through the crossing."

"Never zigzag around the barriers. They are being lowered because a train is approaching.

"Never drive on to a crossing until the road ahead on the other side of the crossing is clear. Do not drive nose to tail over it, and never stop on or just after a level crossing."

"If the barriers stay down and the red lights continue to flash after a train has passed you must wait as another train will soon be approaching. Please remember that it is only safe to cross when the lights go off and any barriers open," he said.

A Translink spokesperson said "Safety and security of our passengers and employees is of top priority. We take all antisocial behaviour very seriously and want the public to use crossings safely, but we will prosecute persistent abuse."

"Railway crossing misuse puts all users and the wider public at risk. We have installed high, quality CCTV at many railway crossings to combat this issue.

"Our advice to the public is simple; warning systems are there for your protection; follow the instructions at level crossings and don't take risks.

"We urge people to contact Translink immediately if they witness any misuse and to report any damage or maintenance requirements urgently."

Police have warned that they will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any driver found misusing level crossings.
