He made his comments following what could have been a fatal accident and after having been inundated with complaints from local residents who stated that many motorists are driving too fast through the residential area.

Councillor McFalone added “Residents living along the Station Road, Maghera have relayed their concerns to me about excessive speeding and I was shocked to learn recently that the School Patrol person at Maghera Controlled Primary School was nearly knocked down due to speeding at a time when young school children were coming out of school.

“The Station Road is used daily by walkers accessing the Pathway to Health route and by the many people visiting the ever popular Mid-Ulster Garden Centre. The area’s residents, especially those with young families, have expressed their concerns regarding speeding cars in the area which pose an obvious risk to children attending local schools.

“I am urging drivers to adhere to the speed limits that are in place as there is more chance of drivers stopping in time if they are driving at the correct speed. Speed is one of the biggest contributing factors to road deaths in Ireland. We do not want to see any fatalities or injuries as a result of speeding cars and reckless drivers.”
