Dromara school safety scheme welcomed

It came from local Councillor Paul Stewart and Lagan Valley MLA Paul Givan.

The two DUP representatives applauded what they described as “a commitment by Roads Service to programme a scheme of electronic signage outside Dromara Primary School as part of the Safer Route to Schools Initiative”.

In a joint statement they said, “Following previous lobbying and meetings on site, we have recently been advised by the Divisional Roads Manager, through the Autumn Progress Report, that this initiative has been programmed for Dromara Primary School before April 2013.”

The two said the campaign for the scheme to be introduced in Dromara was long standing, a response to growing traffic volume.

“We have been lobbying for the Safer Routes to Schools scheme to be implemented outside Dromara Primary for some time,” they said.

“With increased traffic flow through the village the implementation of this scheme will greatly improve the safety of schoolchildren as they arrive and depart from the school.

“This positive step by Roads Service will introduce electronic signs to warn motorists of the increase in pedestrian activity at busy school times.

“The scheme, which should be in place before April 2013, is a welcome addition to road safety in Dromara Village.”
