Dromore choir set for its 57th annual concert

The renowned Dromore and District Male Voice Choir holds its 57th annual concert in Dromore High School next week.

This year the 30-strong choir welcomes, as its main guest, soprano Elizabeth Ross.

Since winning the Downtown Radio Young Musician of the Year bursary at the age of 16, Elizabeth has been in demand as a soloist.

Among other things she appeared on television with the late James Ellis.

She also features regularly in radio and TV broadcasts and has joined the Ulster Orchestra as soloist in its Christmas concerts.

In May she will be appearing as the Fairy Godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella,’ in the Grand Opera House.

Also on the concert bill is Aubrey Campbell, a leading player in the Ballies Mills Accordion Band.

Aubrey will play a varied selection of pieces and his repertoire covers classical to light hearted.

To lighten the mood Leonard Shields will compere the evening.

Musical director David Thompson feels the male voice choir is singing evry bit as well as ever.

“We have worked hard during the season,learning a number of new pieces,” he said, “and we hope that the audience enjoys them.

“We try to include a variety of music ranging from traditional to modern”.

Chairman, James Smyth, added: “This concert is our main source of income.

“The money raised allows the choir to continue in existence and contribute to charities both local and national.

“We hope that our performances bring some pleasure to many people and possibly encourage some new singers to join the choir.”

The concert gets unerway at 8pm on Friday, March 21.
