Police searched a house in Avondale Manor and found Bingham hiding in a wardrobe.

He was later interviewed and admitted to stealing the MP3 player which was valued at 75. He told police he’d thrown the MP3 player away.

His defence solicitor told the court Bingham had later told the probation officer he’d returned the MP3 player to the shop.

He pointed out the MP3 player wasn’t an item on sale, but it belonged to a member of staff.

The defence said: “He (Bingham) lives a rather isolated existence because he has come under threat from other people in the town he’s originally from."

The court was told Bingham had served a significant sentence last year and has already served three weeks on this matter.

District judge Alan White put Bingham on 12 months probation with the condition he attend drug and alcohol awareness counselling. He will also have to complete 100 hours community service.
