Dromore remembers the fallen of WW1

The gathering takes place at 11am to pay respects to those who gave their lives for their country during WW1, and in particular at the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916, 98 years ago.

The Act of Remembrance is the first of a number events planned by Dromore RBL.

On Monday August 4,from 10-11pm, the branch will be holding a Candlelit Vigil signifying that on that date at 11pm, 100 years ago, the UK was officially at war with Germany and its allies, marking the start of World War One.

Again, the vigil will be held at the War Memorial in Market Square.

The local Community is invited to go along and each person may bring a candle as a means of remembering those near and dear to them who gave their lives for their country.

More details will be provided closer to the time.

On Sunday August 17, Dromore RBL will also be holding a Commemoration Service in conjunction with Canon Bryan Kerr and the Congregation of Dromore Cathedral.

This service will commemorate the start of World War One and will be held at 11.30am.

There will be a Parade of Standards with Legion Members and invited dignitaries and services and organisations will also take part.

The parade, led by Skeogh Flute Band, will leave from Dromore Bus Station, Hillsborough Road at about 10.45am.

It will muster from 10.30am and participants are requested to be there no later than 10.15am.

The parade will stop at the War Memorial where an Act of Remembrance will be held and the Dromore Branch will lay a wreath.

It will then proceed to Dromore Cathedral before a return parade after the Service.

A spokesperson said of still more planned events: “Publicans in Dromore have been very supportive of the Poppy Appeal over the past years and thankfully they’ve once again come forward to help later on in the year, for this very worthy cause. Posters will be on display closer to the time.

“Table Quizzes will be held on various dates at the following venues, September 5 - Boyles, October 3 - Culls Bar and November 7 - Mulhollands.”

On Sunday November 9, the annual Act of Remembrance will be held at the War Memorial followed by a Remembrance Service in Dromore Cathedral at 11.30am.
