Drop in number of people out of work

The number of people out of work and claiming benefits in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Council area dropped by 2.2 per cent last month, according to the latest government figures.

The October Labour Market Report reveals that the local jobless total stood at 2,288 during September - 1,604 men and 684 women - a decrease of 51 people from the previous month.

The borough’s claimant count (2.6 per cent of the working age population) is still the third lowest among the 11 new council areas.

The local jobless total has dropped by 17.6 per cent (490 people) over the past year.
