Drove car without insurance

When he came into some money a 19-year-old man bought a car and drove it without having a licence or insurance.

Daire Shannon, whose address was given as Ulster Street, Lurgan, was banned from driving for two months last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He was also fined £250 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for not having insurance on October 23 last year.

As well he was fined £75 and banned for two months for not having a licence, £50 for not displaying ‘L’ plates and £100 for unlawful possession of cannabis.

The court heard the offences came to light when he was stopped by police in the car park at Tescos in Lurgan. Cannabis was discovered in a search of the vehicle.

A solicitor representing Shannon said this was his first time before a magistrates’ court although he had previously been before the youth court.

She explained that the defendant came into some money and purchased this vehicle without having a licence or getting insurance.

The solicitor added that Shannon had an issue with drug use in the past and had been advised to attend with his GP.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said that without a licence or insurance the defendant should not have been in the car at all.
