Drove drunk from wedding

A Waterside man caught driving home from a wedding reception while three times over the legal limit has been banned from driving for 15 months.

Malachy McCloskey,(57) of Simpsons Brae, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess alcohol on July 2, last.

Londonderry Magistrate’s Court heard that police were informed about a man under the influence driving a white van erratically.

They spotted the van parked on Simpsons Brae and found McCloskey standing at the rear of it.

Officers noticed that his eyes were glaxed and he smelled of alcohol as the 57-year-old told them he had just returned from a wedding reception in the Belfray Inn.

He was arrested and a breath sample showed that he had 109mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

A defence solicitor told the court the 57-year-old had "foolishly" driven home, even though he had gone out with the intention of leaving his van at the wedding reception.

Handing down the disqualification and fining McCloskey 175, District Judge Barney McElholm said it was a "very high reading."
