Daniel Patrick McCann, Halls Mill Green, Gilford, was fined £250, ordered to pay a £14 offender’s levy and banned for one year for dangerous driving on April 26 this year.

A £250 fine and a concurrent one year ban were imposed for failing to stop for police.

The court heard that at around 2am police attention was drawn to a vehicle on Commercial Road, Banbridge, before it turned into Scarva Street.

In the 30mph zone the defendant drove at speeds between 60mph and 75mph over a distance of 400 to 500 metres. Police saw him twice cross the white line while trying to overtake and he refused to stop for them.

As he approached the junction with Peggy’s Loaning he was on the wrong side of the road and the back of the car was fishtailing.

McCann stopped in Brookfield Park where police cautioned and arrested him for dangerous driving.

He accepted his driving had been careless but did not agree it had been dangerous. McCann did not think he had been going as fast as the officers indicated.

A barrister representing the defendant said it was foolishness on his part but he only had one road traffic offence on his record which was three points for a speeding matter.

He added that McCann was stone cold sober and described what happened as one-off situation.

The barrister said the defendant was not someone who did this on as repetitive basis.
