Drove up kerb as police vehicle used to block the road

Anthony Martin Smith (28), whose address was given as Lisnagade Mews, Derrytrasna, was fined £250 and banned for 18 months for dangerous driving on May 7 this year.

He was also fined £250 and banned for 12 months concurrently for not having insurance and £100 for failing to stop.

The court heard that shortly after 10am police saw a car being driven at speed on the Tandragee Road in Lurgan going into the Mourneview estate.

It travelled down Glenavon Lane and into McCormack Drive where it did a three point turn in the street.

Police then blocked the road with their vehicle but the car drove up onto the kerb and went into Pollock Drive.

They radioed in details of the vehicle and the direction it was travelling.

When they called at the defendant’s address his father said he had left that morning and was driving the vehicle.

Smith was located at Derrycrow Road at 12.15pm.

He was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle and was arrested.

Mr Hugo Marley, representing the defendant, said Smith had given him written instructions from prison and his client hoped to be out just before 
Christmas.

He added that Smith had been working as a mechanic and the loss of his licence would hamper him in trying to get employment.
