Drugs charge man wanted to get pills for himself

A BALLYMENA man was involved in drugs in order to obtain prescription-type pills for himself in exchange, his barrister told Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Neil Rafferty was speaking on behalf of James Patrick Joseph Lynch (26), of Alexander park, who was given a suspended four month prison sentence after admitting charges of being concerned in the supply of cannabis and amphetamines and possession of both substances.

His co-accused, Patrick Joseph McDonagh (27), of Dunclug Park, was fined 200 after admitting possession of cannabis and amphetamines.

The court was told that the pair were observed by police at the entrance to the Doury Road estate on September 4, throwing plastic bags to the ground.

They were found to contain 275 worth of cannabis resin and 25 worth of Speed. Lynch’s mobile phone also contained messages consistent with dealing in drugs.

Mr Rafferty said Lynch has been “dabbling in and out of drugs” for a number of years.

He said Lynch had been treated for an addiction to codeine adding that the defendant’s involvement with illegal substances was in order to get codeine pills for himself.
