Drumcree Church plans cause division

Development plans for Drumcree Parish Church are threatening to split the congregation, with claims that the crisis is worse than the infamous '˜stand-off'.

A letter, purporting to represent around 100 concerned parishioners, says the proposals, which include the removal of the pews, will “destroy” the character of the ancient building.

And it claims the plans, many of which are still at an early stage, were not approved by the full Select Vestry.

One parishioner has even claimed that the situation is in danger of becoming “another Knocknamuckley” - a reference to a split in that church after differences of opinion in the style of worship.

However, the rector, the Rev Gary Galway, said the church cannnot stand still and that the proposals had been approved by a majority vote of the Select Vestry, which represents parishioners.
