Drunk driver found asleep in car

POLICE in Cookstown who received report of a car being driven irregularly, discovered it parked awkwardly in a supermarket car park.

The male driver, Robertas Mickevicius 22, from Chapel Street, Cookstown was found asleep behind the wheel. On being spoken to an odour of alcohol was detected after which he was arrested.

Whilst in custody he provided an evidential breath sample which returned a reading of 67mcg of alcohol – this being 32mcg in excess. The incident occurred on January 30 and the defendant was released on bail to attend court the following month but whilst he turned up the first time he failed to appear on March 9. After being traced and arrested by bench warrant a defence solicitor told East Tyrone Magistrates Court his client was “unaware of the need to return to court”, which was rejected by District Judge John Meehan . He imposed fines totaling £200 and disqualified driving for 18 months.
